If you've ever swapped out a thermostat before, you know it's supposed to be a quick job. Pop the old one off, check the wires, mount the new one, pair it. I'd been installing thermostats for HVAC contractors since 2016, and by 2021, smart models were routine. So when a homeowner asked me to put in an ecobee smart thermostat premium, I thought, "No-brainer. Forty-five minutes, tops."
It took me three hours and twenty-five minutes. Here's what went wrong.
Mistake #1: Assuming the old thermostat had a C-wire
Most buyers focus on the touchscreen and the Wi-Fi, then completely miss the power supply. A smart thermostat needs a common wire (C-wire) or a power extender kit. The house was built in 2005, so I expected to see a C-wire in the bundle. I didn't even bother to pull the old thermostat off completely before grabbing my tools. I just assumed.
I popped the cover, and there were only four wires: R, W, G, Y. No C. That was my first red flag. The smart thermostat premium has a built-in air quality monitor and a bigger display, so it needs more power than the old model. Without a C-wire, it would either not turn on or randomly drop Wi-Fi.
I had a Power Extender Kit in my van, but I had used it on the previous job and hadn't restocked. So I had to drive 20 minutes to my supplier to get a new one before I could even begin. I kept thinking, "You've done this a hundred times. How did you not check first?" That trip cost me about $45 in lost time—actually, the gas was maybe $8, but the wasted hour was worse.
Mistake #2: The ceiling fan light bulb size
While I was setting up the ladder, the homeowner asked if I could replace a dead bulb in the ceiling fan above the hallway. "What size is it?" I asked. He gave me a blank look. I said, "Probably a standard A19. I'll grab one from the truck." I didn't take out the dead bulb and look at the base, because I was in a hurry to get started. That was dumb.
I came back with an A19 LED bulb. The fixture needed an E12 candelabra base—the skinny little ones you usually see in chandeliers. Of course I didn't have one in the truck. So I made another trip to the hardware store. That set me back another 30 minutes and turned a friendly favor into a scheduling disaster.
Now I have a rule: never guess a bulb size. Unscrew it first. It takes two minutes to remove and check, but it saves an hour when you're wrong.
Mistake #3: The titanium cooktop question
About halfway through the wiring, the homeowner's wife walked in, phone in hand, and asked, "Hey, does titanium work on induction cooktop?" She was shopping for a new sauté pan and saw a titanium model on sale.
Here's the thing: I'm an HVAC installer, not a material science expert. But instead of saying "I don't know," I said "Oh, probably. Titanium is a metal, so I think it works." I wanted to look helpful. She even thanked me and put the pan in her cart.
It was only later, when I got home, that I checked and found out titanium is not magnetic enough for induction cooktops. The cooktop relies on electromagnetic fields that only respond to ferromagnetic materials—iron, some stainless steels. Titanium is not one of them. She must have verified too, because I got a text that evening: "FYI, titanium does NOT work on induction. Thanks anyway!" I felt like an idiot.
The lesson? If you don't know something, say so. Clients respect an honest "I'll check that for you" more than a confident guess that's wrong.
Mistake #4: The ecobee logo decal
This one was just weird. The customer had ordered a custom vinyl decal with the ecobee logo to put on the wall above the thermostat. He insisted on placing it right after I finished mounting the base—while the thermostat was still in my hand. The decal was about 4 inches tall, and he put it just above the top edge, basically touching the unit.
The ecobee smart thermostat premium has its ambient temperature sensor on the top edge, near where the decal went. The decal partially blocked the airflow around the sensor, which could cause the thermostat to read the room temperature wrong. I had to ask him to move it about three inches to the left. He was okay with it, but I should have flagged it before he stuck it down. Another small thing that I could have anticipated.
Mistake #5: The 17 inch mini fridge stealing the outlet
Okay, this one deserves its own title. The house had a 17 inch mini fridge in the hallway, plugged into the only nearby outlet. Since the house had no C-wire, I needed to use the Power Extender Kit, which requires plugging a small 24V AC transformer into a wall outlet. The mini fridge was occupying that exact outlet. We had to unplug it, which made it beep and start warming up. The homeowner didn't want that, so we had to find an extension cord long enough to reach an outlet outside the hallway. That took another 15 minutes.
In hindsight, I should have scouted the room before I started. I could have moved the fridge and plugged an extension cord in right away instead of waiting until I needed power.
How it ended
Finally, the thermostat was mounted, wired, and powered. The ecobee booted up, the app paired in about two minutes, and the homeowner loved the remote sensors and the air quality monitor. The install itself was flawless. The problem was all the stuff around it.
I left their house around 5 p.m., feeling like I'd just run a marathon. A job that should have taken me 45 minutes took over three hours because I didn't check simple things: the C-wire, the bulb base, the area around the thermostat, the outlet. I also gave horrible advice about cookware. That day, I decided I needed a system.
What I changed in my process
I went home and typed up a pre-install checklist on my phone. It took me about ten minutes, and it's probably saved me hundreds of hours since. Here's what it says:
- Check the existing wiring for a C-wire. If it's missing, grab the Power Extender Kit without assuming.
- Ask about any side tasks (like changing light bulbs). If I don't know the size, remove the old bulb first.
- Only answer questions within my expertise. For everything else, say "I'll check and get back to you."
- Inspect the area around the thermostat mount for any decorations, obstacles, or airflow blockers.
- Verify outlet availability near the thermostat if I might need the Power Extender Kit.
Since I started using this checklist, my average install time has dropped from about 90 minutes to around 50 minutes. I've also stopped making extra trips to the supply house, and I've saved at least a couple of hours a week on repeat issues.
Efficiency isn't about working faster. It's about knowing what can go wrong and taking two minutes to check the obvious stuff. Like a print pro once told me about Pantone colors: the right match the first time costs nothing. The reprint costs double. My thermostat checklist is the same idea—check once, install once. And if someone asks you about titanium cookware, do yourself a favor: say you'll look it up.
