The moment a thermostat looks "stuck" is almost always a moment of doubt. You're on a service call, the homeowner points at the ecobee screen and says, "It's been reading 68 all day—and the heat hasn't kicked on once." You tap the screen, adjust the setpoint. The screen flashes the new target for a second, then settles back to 68. The homeowner's jaw tightens. They're already mentally pricing a replacement. And honestly, that's the moment when most contractors decide to swap the thermostat and move on.
I get it. Time is money on a service call. But I've spent the last four years reviewing returned ecobee thermostats, and the pattern is consistent: too many of them aren't broken when they arrive at my bench. The "stuck on temperature" label was a misdiagnosis.
Why "Stuck" Is Usually a Misdiagnosis
Before I go further, let me be clear about what I do. I'm the quality and brand compliance manager at ecobee. Cause #2: Voltage Drops and the Wiring Behind It
Most ecobee thermostats require continuous 24VAC power. When there's no C-wire in the wall, the installation uses the included Power Extender Kit—and that's where a lot of "stuck" units start their journey. A miswired PEK supplies intermittent power. The thermostat boots, works for a day or two, then drops the 24V rail and locks its outputs to prevent short-cycling the HVAC equipment. The screen stays on with the last good temperature. To the homeowner, that's a frozen thermostat.

Cause #3: Compressor Protection Is Doing Its Job
Air conditioning compressors have a minimum off-cycle—most HVAC systems spec between four and five minutes—to prevent short-cycling and self-destruction. When the thermostat calls for cooling, the compressor kicks off, and the thermostat waits for the protection window to pass before re-energizing the circuit. During that window, the display holds steady. The number doesn't move. And the homeowner is convinced it's broken.
It's not broken. It's waiting.
Cause #4: Threshold Settings That Are Too Wide
The default heat/cool differential on most ecobee models is around 1°F. But when someone changes the threshold to 2°F or 3°F to reduce cycling and "save energy," the system will intentionally let the temperature drift well past the setpoint before it reacts. The occupants feel like the thermostat is ignoring them. The thermostat is following the configured threshold exactly as told.
The Real Cost of a Misdiagnosis
Let's talk money, because that's what actually gets people's attention. A misdiagnosis means a wasted truck roll, an RMA process to deal with, and a homeowner who's lost confidence in both the product and your service. That's a real cost—and not just the time. It's trust.
The energy angle matters too. When a thermostat is power-cycling or the system is short-cycling, the HVAC equipment runs less efficiently. I've reviewed estimates in our Q4 2024 energy data suggesting that short-cycling alone can add 12–20% to a home's heating and cooling usage. Then there's the equipment itself. A compressor that cycles too frequently doesn't fail immediately—it wears out. The $40 wiring fix becomes a $2,500 compressor replacement two years later. I've watched it happen.
The Root Issue: We'd Rather Swap Parts Than Diagnose
Here's the uncomfortable truth: most "stuck" thermostats aren't a product failure. They're a diagnostic failure. And diagnostic failures happen because swapping a part is faster than understanding a system.

An Honest Diagnostic Checklist

- Check which sensors are active. Open the sensor tile and see if remote sensors are pulling the average. Disable or account for sensors in odd locations.
- Measure voltage at the terminals. You should see 24VAC between R and C. Below 20V means the transformer or wiring needs attention.
- Watch a full cycle. Wait at least five minutes after the last run before concluding anything. Compressor protection alone explains many "stuck" reports.
- Review threshold settings. If the differential was changed to 2°F or 3°F, reset to defaults and see if behavior returns to normal.
- Look at the thermostat's location. Exterior wall, near a supply vent, or in direct sunlight? The sensor reads what it's exposed to, and the system responds accordingly.
If you've checked all five and the unit still won't respond, misreads by more than a couple degrees, or has a dead touchscreen—then you might have a genuine defect.
