If you manage purchasing for a company with multiple locations—or even a single larger office—and you're being asked to evaluate smart thermostats like ecobee, this list is for you. It's not about which thermostat has the flashiest app. It's about what the total installation, integration, and maintenance cost will actually look like.

Here's a pattern I've seen: The $350 quote turned into $600 after the contractor discovered old wiring, needed a PEK, and had to come back a second time. The $450 all-inclusive quote from a contractor who inspected first was actually cheaper.
Step 4: Verify Your Network Infrastructure
This sounds basic. It's not. Smart thermostats need reliable Wi-Fi. If your thermostats are losing connection, you lose remote control and scheduling, which defeats the purpose of the upgrade.
Before installation:
- Check Wi-Fi signal strength at each planned thermostat location.

People think a smart thermostat is a single device decision. Actually, it's an ecosystem decision.
ecobee's key advantage for admins managing multi-unit installations isn't the thermostat itself. It's:
- The contractor platform for remote diagnostics and maintenance scheduling.
- The API and integration with major smart home or building platforms.
- The remote sensor ecosystem for balancing temperature in zones with poor airflow.
Why this matters for total cost: If you're in a commercial setting, being able to manage all your units from one dashboard saves your facilities team hours of manual checking. The time savings in troubleshooting alone can justify a higher upfront cost per unit.
My experience: After a year with 12 ecobee units across three locations, our facilities manager reports spending about 30 minutes per quarter on adjustments versus the three hours per week he used to spend walking around and checking old programmable thermostats. That's a significant operational saving.
Step 6: Double-Check Support and Warranty Coverage
I'm not going to pretend like every installation goes smoothly. When something fails—and it might—you want a clear path to resolution.
Before buying:
- Check the warranty terms. ecobee offers a standard warranty, but verify it covers commercial use if that's your application.
- Confirm technical support availability. Is there a contractor-dedicated support line?
- RMA process: How easy is it to get a replacement if a unit is DOA (dead on arrival)?
One thing I didn't expect: The time cost of dealing with a failed unit. A thermostat that stops communicating after six months: troubleshooting with your contractor, then with tech support, then waiting for a replacement. If it's out of stock, that's another delay. I now factor a 5% buffer into my hardware budget for potential replacements over the first year.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Based on my experience and talking to a few other admin buyers, here are the top blind spots:
- Buying based on retail price only. The cheapest unit online might have no contractor integration, leading to higher labor costs.
- Assuming all units are identical for install. Wiring differences, network requirements, and sensor setups vary. A site visit from your contractor before ordering saves money.
- Ignoring the network. Weak Wi-Fi or IT security roadblocks are the #1 cause of delay in my experience. Or rather, tied for #1 with unexpected wiring.
- Not asking contractors about their preferred brand. If your HVAC partner does 90% of their work with Honeywell or Nest, onboarding ecobee might be a learning curve for them—which you pay for.
Bottom line: The ecobee smart thermostat is a solid piece of hardware. But whether it's the right choice for your facility depends on your exact hardware, your contractor's expertise, and your network setup.
